"...Maria was in a hurry. She was late for an appointment to get fitted for her wedding dress, but was having a hard time getting to the city-center shop because it was an unusually windy day. With gusts of wind blowing in her face, she noticed a narrow lane—one she hadn’t noticed before—and turned down it, hoping it was a shortcut.

Suddenly, a new world came into focus. Not only was she free of the wind, but this narrow street seemed different. Flanked by gas-lit Victorian iron lamps attached to half-timbered façades, the lane was paved with chunky cobblestones. Maria felt like she’d just stepped into a dream.

A dream she wouldn’t mind remaining in for a while. Maria was in a predicament. She was due to get married this summer but lately her second thoughts had been transforming into third thoughts. They used to share a love of board games and puzzles. But her partner’s interest had faded in the last year, replaced by his enthusiasm for a motorcycle club he recently joined.

Maria had just realised she was alone on the street when a shop on her left caught her eye. The façade was different from the half-timbered wood exterior of the rest of the structures on the street. Light spilled out of a large curved window onto the cobbles. In the window, a dummy wore a full suit of samurai armour, a long glistening blade held horizontally in front of its chest. On its head, a scowling animal mask, fangs bared. She looked above the window and saw three words in gold—the shop’s name?

Maria looked at her watch. She knew she was late. But something was pulling her toward this shop. She extended her right hand, placed it on the doorknob, turned it clockwise and pushed. The door slowly opened. ..."
